BC’s Independent Investigation’s Office (IIO BC) is investigating after a man died in a police-involved shooting in Tappen on Tuesday afternoon, Jan 7.
Salmon Arm RCMP were called to a mischief complaint to a house in Tappen yesterday, after someone reported ‘severe’ damage to their property.
Police say they found the suspect at a neighbouring house, but called off the arrest due to the risk involved.
“RCMP officers set-up a containment perimeter, and called the Emergency Response Team (ERT) to assist with the arrest,” said the release from the RCMP. “A warrant to enter the home was granted, and officers deployed a chemical agent in an attempt to make the man leave the residence.”
The man left the house and tried to flee the area, but he was shot by a police officer after an ‘interaction; with a police officer.
“The [man] died and no one else was injured during the incident,” noted the release. “The IIO BC is now investigating police actions as it relates to the man’s death.”
As the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
The IIO is asking potential witnesses to call 1-855-446-8477.
