Environment Canada says it’s been an average January so far in Kamloops when it comes to snow that has fallen in the city.
While it’s possible that neighbourhoods in higher elevations like Aberdeen and Pineview could have seen more snow, Meteorologist Bobby Sekhon says there’s been 17 cm so far recorded at Kamloops Airport.
“So far based on the daily totals, that’s getting pretty close to the monthly average for Kamloops, which is about 18.7 cm,” he told NL News. “So yeah, it’s been a fair bit of snow lately. Also the cold temperatures last week, all that kind of stuck around last week, just iced over and stuff, so yeah definitely makes it seems very snowy around.
By comparison, Sekhon says in Vernon, there has been 71 cm of snow so far this month. That’s more than double the usual 40.5 cm in a typical January.
“It can also make for some tricky driving conditions too,” noted Sekhon.
North of Kamloops, data from Sun Peaks Resort shows it’s been the snowiest January there in the past 25 years. Sekhon was asked about the stark difference in snow fall amounts between Kamloops and Sun Peaks and Vernon.
“Where Kamloops airport is, it’s kind of a unique micro-climate around there,” he said. “It’s generally going to be drier than the surrounding areas, the higher elevations, and other parts of the Interior. For a relatively drier place, it seems like about average for snowfall in Kamloops in January.”
With temperatures above seasonal expected, Sekhon says Environment Canada isn’t forecasting any more significant snow events in Kamloops for the rest of this month.
