Kamloops RCMP say a woman lost a few hundred dollars in a telemarketing scam after being told her computer had a virus.
Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the victim got a call from someone claiming to be from a computer company, and asked for access to the victim’s computer.
“And the victim did give them this access and the fraudster had access to her banking and credit card information,” she said. “So we just want to remind people that if you receive a phone call from someone about your computer system security status, just hang up.”
Shelkie says to not give your personal information to anyone you don’t trust, and to also never give a stranger remote access to your computer.
“This person lost only a few hundred dollars before she was able to change her bank account and cancel her credit card,” Shelkie said. “However, when a scammer has access to your bank account and credit card information, they can literally take as much as money as they can out of this account.”
She’s also recommending that you ensure your computer has anti-virus software on it, but to buy the software from a source that you know and trust.
And Shelkie says to report all calls that you think are scams to the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
