Kamloops city staff have assured council that no users of the Canada Games Pool “will be without water” during construction which will close the pool for six months.
Director of community services Byron McCorkell says the last thing the city wants to do is interrupt athletes on a training cycle.
“The number-one issue that we brought to the construction table, has been concern for our user groups. And Mr. [Darren] Crundwell [the city’s capital projects manager] and the team are well aware of the potential impacts. And what we then did with our program team, is look at what we can use Brock Pool for, what we can use Westsyde Pool for. And then we talked with our user groups on the same thing.”
Civic operations director Jen Fretz says the closure likely would be longer with a different process.
“I think one of the things that’s important to realize is if we weren’t doing this project delivery method, I would suggest the pool closure time would be far greater than six months. Because we know all this information up front, and there’s literally a day-to-day schedule for the work to be completed, we’ve been able to reduce that closure time to six months.”
The Canada Games Pool is expected to be closed from June 29 to Jan. 2, while $13.49 million worth of work happens inside.
