Update:
A 14-year-old boy who went missing at Sun Peaks yesterday has been found safe.
Kamloops Search and Rescue spokesperson Jenn Stahn says it is a happy ending for everyone involved in the search for Carson Hadwin.
“Right now I don’t have a lot of information but I have been told that he has been found safe, but needed ambulatory care,” she told NL News.
Stahn says there were about 20 search and rescue volunteers at Sun Peaks today looking for Hadwin, who failed to return to Kamloops following a day at Sun Peaks. RCMP say he was skiing out of bounds at Sun Peaks when he got lost yesterday afternoon.
Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says Carson was able to find an old shed, but he wasn’t able to get inside to spend the night.
“Then this morning just after 11, a spotting plane with search and rescue saw footprints going into the shed but not coming out,” Shelkie said. “So they alerted the ground crews and Kamloops Search and Rescue then attended the location on snowmobiles and found the boy.”
Shelkie says staying near the shed waiting to be rescued was the best thing that Carson could have done after he got lost, adding he’s understandably cold and hungry today.
“It is a very dangerous to go out of bounds when you are skiing or snowboarding and its just situations like this that brings it to the forefront of just how dangerous it could be,” noted Shelkie.
On twitter, Carson’s cousin Ash Kelly says he seems to be doing well, noting the family is relieved.
“I’ve spoken with his family on the ground. He will be given a full medical assessment by a trauma team upon landing,” she wrote. “We are all so relieved. The power of your love was felt!”
