The Trudeau Liberals have said they plan to ban what they call military style assault rifles through an Order in Council and one opposition MP is backing an online petition for it to be debated in the House of Commons.
Alberta Conservative Glen Motz doesn’t like the feds using an Order in Council to push through any firearm legislation, calling it “an egregious overreach of executive authorities.”
While on the NL Morning News, the former police officer said they government is not going after actual criminals. “This ban will target law abiding Canadians who are the most vetted and responsible owners of firearms anywhere and certainly they’re the most vetted in Canada of individuals, they do not pose a threat to public safety.”
The member from Medicine Hat – Cardston – Warner said he’s not even sure what the Liberals mean. “That term, it has no definition in this country. If they are referring to, I don’t even know what they mean by it, but if they’re referring to military style firearms, the ones where you can fire multiple rounds with one pull of the trigger, we call it that fully automatic or large capacity magazines, those type of firearms are already prohibited in Canada and have been for decades.”
Motz also thinks pushing it through without debate is wrong. “I look at it as an opportunity for Canadians to voice their concerns. You know it’s unfortunate that so many thousands of Canadians feel that they are ignored or maligned of even demonized by the Liberals to the extent that this petition is even necessary.”
The petition already has more signatures than any Canadian e-petition with 140 thousand and counting.
It’s open until February 15th.
