A peaceful protest broke out at the intersection of Summit and McGill for a few minutes over the noon hour today, in support of the Wet’suwet’en hereditary chiefs who are against the Coastal GasLink pipeline project.
“We came out to support First Nations People and in fact all people, ” said Pam, one of the protesters who spoke to NL News. “We need to stop what we are doing now and we need to stop these pipelines and stop the use of fossil fuels so that we can all live.”
The protests were part of a larger series of protests that also happened in Vancouver and Victoria this week.
Pam’s daughter, 12-year-old Bronwyn was one of about 30 to 40 protesters in Kamloops today.
“I just think it’s really wrong to be destroying Mother Nature with all these pipes and everything,” she said. “We were here, we were brought here and then we are destroying our world that we live in. We only have one world.”
Pam says while some drivers were annoyed by the traffic delays, others were showing their solidarity towards Kamloops protesters.
Traffic is back moving – and has been for some time – at the intersection.
