The city of Kamloops is closing all city-operated hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms until further notice to address the COVID-19 pandemic.
The move is effective today, March 14, and is based on direction from the BC and Yukon Branch of the Lifesaving Society, which sets guidelines for aquatic facilities.
The City has also updated its swim schedule during March Break.
“As the COVID-19 outbreak continues to evolve, the City of Kamloops is working diligently to keep residents informed about important steps we are taking to help keep the public and our employees safe, and reduce potential opportunities for exposure and spread of this virus,” said a statement from the city.
“We care about the public’s health and well-being as well as the health and safety of our employees, and are actively working with our Emergency Program Manager and Health and Safety Department.”
The city says its precautions will also include practicing social distancing, increased cleaning of surfaces and public areas, while also encouraging people to stay home if they are feeling ill.
“We’re also committed to keeping you up to date about changes to City services,” added the statement. “We will continue to monitor the spread and seriousness of this virus and update our processes as required.”
Starting on Monday, people will see signs at city buildings with precautions, among them asking people to not enter any city facilities if they are sick.
The move comes as several B.C. universities and other facilities across Canada have announced closures to prevent the spread of the virus.
Thompson Rivers University expects to have an update for staff and students by 1 p.m. on Sunday.
