
The city of Kamloops is closing 46 city-run playground equipment effective immediately, to encourage compliance with social distancing measures.
The city will also be installing signs about social distancing at all city parks as the fields at these playgrounds are not closed at this time.
“Social distancing is not optional. We are taking these steps to limit groups from congregating and to protect our residents,” said Mayor Ken Christian.
“I know at this point in time, it’s difficult for you especially as you are just developing social networks to kind of abandon them, but its important. It’s important for you and your family and our community that you avoid gatherings, and stay six feet apart from people.”
City bylaw services will be closely monitoring social distancing at all City parks and other public gathering areas.
“If social distancing practices are not being adhered to, the City may close other public gathering areas in the near future,” added Christian.
Additionally, School District 73 has followed suit and closed all of its play ground equipment. Signs are being installed in the next few days at all the play grounds at elementary schools throughout the district .
“The fields and play courts at school grounds are not closed, however social distancing signage will be posted,” said SD73 spokesperson Diana Skoglund, in a statement.
The city of Merritt has also closed all playgrounds to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
