A familiar name in hockey circles but this Turgeon will play TRU Wolfpack volleyball next season.
The pack are adding highly touted 6’6″ recruit Max Turgeon out of Calgary. He is the son of former NHL’er Sylvain Turgeon, and the nephew of Pierre Turgeon.
The younger Turgeon – who is an outside hitter/middle – will graduate from Western Canada High School in Alberta this June. He plays club volleyball with the Canuck Volleyball Club.
“I say my strength would be my mental strength. Being able to read the game, I’m very good at that, which comes into my other strengths, which makes me fast and I’m very agile and very fast,” Turgeon said.
“That’s what I’ve been told by coaches before that that’s my strength, that I’m able to read situation and move really fast across the court.”
Speaking to NL Sports, he says his family has been great in his decision to pursue volleyball.
“I just didn’t enjoy the sport of hockey. They weren’t pushy at all with it. They didn’t care which sport I played, they just wanted me to be happy,” he added. “My dad was very happy for me to find a sport that I enjoyed in the end,”
Wolfpack coach Pat Hennelly called Turgeon ‘a blue chip guy’ and admits it was a long recruiting process, but says he’s thrilled to add Turgeon to the roster for next season.
While with the Canuck volleyball club, Max urgeon played alongside Dylan Van Spankaren and Kobby Nyarko, who just finished up their first seasons in Kamloops.
