Sunday marked the 40th anniversary of Terry Fox beginning his Marathon of Hope and his older brother says Terry’s legacy is stronger every year.
Fred Fox was on the NL Morning News and said Terry would have never dreamed he’d be remembered the way he is.
“No, not at all and that’s been a lot of our thinking and reflection over the past few days is Terry could never have imagined what he started by simply dipping his artificial foot in the Atlantic Ocean in St John’s, what that would have started,” he said.
Fred Fox says Terry journaled everyday, and also had no idea what he was starting when he cracked open his journal four decades ago.
“At the end of the day after he finished his running of a marathon every day he journaled and what he journaled 40 years ago, on April 12th, the very first words he wrote down on his journal page was ‘Today is the day it all begins,'” Fred said. “He could never have imagined what that would have meant 40 years later.”
He says Terry didn’t start the run to seek attention or fame.
“He was truly doing it for all the right reasons in helping other people and raising money for cancer research so one day a cure will be found or advances will be made and he would be proud to know that Canadians and not only Canadians but people around the world have done their best to do that.”
This year’s Terry Fox Run is scheduled for September 20th.
