The Cariboo Regional District has activated its Emergency Operations Centre to respond to flooding issues in the region.
It says road conditions are being assessed and affected residents are being asked to contact the Emergency Operations Centre.
“There are some areas in the region currently experiencing high stream flows and flooding,” said a statement from the CRD. “Conditions for major roads are reported at the Drive BC website and forest service roads are reported at the Forest District webpage.”
The CRD says if your access is cut-off due to flooding, to shelter in place and contact officials if you need help. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, people are also being urged to practice social distancing, which includes frequent hand washing.
As well, people living near a river or stream are asked to ensure they have three-day emergency kits ready if they have to leave their homes in an instant.
Residents are also asked to register for the Cariboo Chilcotin Emergency Notification System to receive evacuation alerts or other emergency updates.
Flooding Notice Issued for Wildwood
Meanwhile, a flooding notice has been issued for residents in Wildwood, northeast of Williams Lake, because of high water levels at Minton Lake.
A statement from the CRD says there is currently unregulated water flow occurring at the Minton Lake dam spillway, which could lead to ‘unexpected increases in the waterways downstream from the dam’ as water levels continue to rise.
“Low lying areas may experience some flooding,” said a CRD statement. “Area residents are reminded that sandbags and sand are available for free on a self-serve basis at the Wildwood Fire Hall.”
“If you are filling sandbags or sandbagging property please remember to keep safety top of mind and maintain physical distancing to reduce the risk of coronavirus transmission.”
In the event of an emergency, people are asked to contact 1-866-759-4977 or email report@cariboord.ca. If possible, you’re asked to attach pictures to help officials determine the appropriate response.
