Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says she trusts the processes in place when it comes to limiting and preventing the spread of COVID-19 out of work camps.
That’s after a dozen cases have been reported at the Kearn Lake oil sands project near Fort McMurray, which has led Interior Health to warn about potential spread in our region from that camp.
“We do know that there have been some people who have returned home to British Columbia who were exposed, potentially, in Alberta, and vice versa. And they are self-isolating, being monitored by public health. So is the whole way we need to approach this,” Henry says.
“We’ve been watching very carefully. We know that there’s a lot of flow of essential workers across the border and workers in the oil sands in Alberta, and in northern B.C. in particular. So we have quite detailed guidance, very similar to what they’re using in Alberta.”
Henry says essential work has to get done, but the provinces have to do their best to make sure the virus doesn’t get in work camps.
