The Chair of the health-care assistant and practical nurse programs at TRU says demand for new grads has been unprecedented.
Speaking on The Jeff Andreas Show, Michelle Borgland says normally she would get one or two calls a week from employers looking to hire new graduates, but right now she is getting one to two per day.
Borgland says students are excited to have secured full-time employment, but there are some nerves as well.
“But, the feedback I’ve received from the majority of them is they feel that we prepared them, that our educators prepared them well to deal with any situation.”
She says she has never been busier in her career.
“But, it’s been well worth it. I am finding that I am receiving more calls and emails from recruiters all over the province looking to have the care aids come in and immediately start working in the health care professional field.”
Borgland says the next health-care assistant program starts in June and the 27 week course is already 75% full. The cap for that program is 30 students.
She says it has more seating and lab capacity available with the new population health building.
“So we are moving into a beautiful new facility, state of the art lab and we will be able to socially isolate. We have a plan in place to be able to do that for students that will be coming into our June intake.”
