It may not be stats-quo, but the registrars office at Thompson River’s University hasn’t been overly impacted by the pandemic yet.
Speaking on The Jeff Andreas Show, Associate Vice President of Enrollment Services Mike Bluhm says the vast majority of admission decision are made based on information that was already made available prior to COVID-19 really impacting the school system.
“Anticipate maybe they’ll be some challenges with what grades we may receive, but we’ve got some confirmation from the Ministry of Education that teachers are still teaching, students are still engaged in learning form a distance and we will see transcripts, we’ll see final grades, students will graduate that meet grad requirements. So, the way that information comes to us may look or feel a bit different.”
Bluhm says it has actually seen a little bump in the number of people applying. “We’re actually seeing a small increase in the application volume this year over last year. Not a significant amount so I would say it’s abut the same. But, certainly not seeing an impact of the COVID-19 situation at this point.”
Bluhm says it is certainly not status quo. “There really is no normal or usual anymore it seems. So we know that things may look different from the perspective of the final information we gather from applicants.”
In terms of international students, Bluhm says the process is very much the same as normal and offers made to those students would not be based on their ability to be here.
At this point, Bluhm says he hasn’t noticed any changes yet in areas of interest that may alter or change as a result of the novel coronavirus.
