Kamloops RCMP have a 46-year-old Kamloops man in custody after a vehicle was broken into on Lorne Street this morning.
Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says surveillance photos showed a man on a BMX bike breaking a window and stealing several items including a laptop and a purse.
Around noon, Shelkie says the owner of the vehicle was in the 700-block of St. Paul Street with some friends when he spotted a man who matched the description of the suspect.
“As a friend attempted to stop the bike, the suspect allegedly produced a machete,” Shelkie said. “The friend pulled the suspect off of his bike and another friend secured the machete. The suspect got back on his bike and was attempting to leave the area when police arrived and saw him.”
She says this suspect tried to run away from police a few blocks away, after he got off his bike, but was quickly apprehended.
“The suspect was arrested and all of the items that had been stolen from the vehicle this morning were located on his person,” Shelkie added.
“We don’t recommend that citizens try to apprehend a suspect. In this case, the suspect had a machete. Luckily, no one was injured and the officers were able to take the suspect into custody.”
She says the BC Prosecution Service will be determining what charges the 46-year-old man could be facing.
