Graduating students in the Kamloops-Thompson School District will have some type of celebration this year.
What exactly those will look like remains very much up in the air right now. Speaking on The Jeff Andreas Show, Board Chair Kathleen Karpuk says each school will be working on their own plan with the help of the district.
“We are going to try to find a way to recognize each graduate so their family can see their accomplishments because that’s important to recognize. Students have worked really hard and they deserve to have that recognition and that experience even if it is scaled back a bit.”
The district has 14 graduation events which are scheduled to start in late May,
Karpuk says it is working on multiple scenarios right now.”The first thing that I want to reassure people with is that we are not going to cancel graduation. It is going to look different, but we are not going to cancel graduation. And right now we’re working with a few different scenarios. We’re probably going to have some type of a small scale virtual graduation.”
“It depends of course on public health officer’s orders and whether or not we’re able to meet in smaller groups or if we’re still having to do the social distancing.”
At this week’s board meeting it discussed two options. Those are to postpone ceremonies or find an alternate method of accomplishing the recognition of grade 12 students.
