The province is announcing 33 new cases of COVID-19 and one new death, for a total of 2,145 cases in the province.
It includes four new cases across Interior Health, which now has 174 cases of COVID-19.
Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry says there has been one more death – in the Fraser Health region – bringing B.C.’s total up to 112 people who have died of the virus.
“Today is National Physicians Day, as well as the start of National Medical Laboratory Week,” said Henry, in a statement.
“It is an opportunity for all of us to recognize the dedication and contributions of our physicians, our medical laboratory professionals and all our other health-care workers – the people whose responsibility it is to care for all of us.”
She’s asking people to keep a safe physical distance from people around you if you are spending time outside this weekend.
“Let’s honour and protect them by doing all we can to continue to flatten the curve.”
Twenty-four of the 79 people in hospital with COVID-19 are in intensive care. Both those numbers are down from yesterday, which saw 30 people in intensive care, and 82 in hospital. The number of people in hospital dropped below 80 people for the first time since March 27.
The province says there have been no new outbreaks at long-term care homes or assisted living facilities, however there continues to be concern because of outbreaks at poultry processing facilities in the Lower Mainland.
“There are 52 employees confirmed positive at Superior Poultry in Coquitlam, and 35 employees confirmed positive at United Poultry in Vancouver,” Henry noted. “Of note, the United Poultry case number has been decreased, correcting a reporting error in yesterday’s report.”
As well, there are now 133 inmates and staff who have tested positive at the Mission Institution, as well as 15 positive cases of COVID-19 connected to the Kearl Lake plant in Alberta.
Henry says to date, 1,357 people – or 63 per cent – are considered to have fully recovered from COVID-19 in the province.
