UPDATE: May 14, 9:40 a.m.
RCMP Traffic Services has confirmed that a motorcyclist was killed in yesterday’s serious crash on the Yellowhead Highway at Paul Lake Road, by the Halston Connector.
The woman in her fifties was from Kamloops, and she died at the scene of the crash. It happened at about 4 p.m. yesterday.
“It was determined that a vehicle, a 2010 cream-coloured Kia Soul with Alberta plates, was travelling southbound on Highway 5 when it turned left on a red light in front of a northbound motorcycle,” Cpl. Mike Halskov told NL News.
The driver of the Kia Soul is in her seventies. She stayed at the crash scene and was not injured, with police saying impairment was not a factor.
“Driver error sometimes is a factor in these things and it sometimes is no more than that, and other times there’s other things going on here,” Halskov added, noting there could be charges to come.
“We’ll let the investigation take its course and figure all that out in due course. Right now, at the very minimum, it looks like there could be a charge under the motor vehicle act for the intersection infraction.”
The Yellowhead Highway was closed for several hours last night while emergency crews were at the crash scene. The crash was caught on camera, but police are asking for witnesses to step forward.
“Sometimes you know there’s some pre-collision driving behaviour that was not captured on video that somebody might have seen on their dashcam footage or maybe they made an observation,” Halskov added.
“I don’t know if that was the case here but certainly we want to expand our horizons and capture as much information as possible.”
