RCMP Traffic Services says there was a lot of bad behavior on B.C. roads over the long weekend.
Superintedent Holly Turton says 57 cars were impounded in the southern Interior for excessive speed, and nearly 150 cars were impounded province-wide for that reason.
“Last week, I stated that this spike in excessive speed violations is concerning and unacceptable. That sentiment has not changed, and I’m disappointed that there are drivers who continue to choose to break the law, and put themselves and others at risk,” Turton says.
“This is not a game. Our officers will continue to demonstrate their commitment to road safety. There is no excuse, including COVID-19, for this kind of high-risk driving behavior anywhere in our province.”
Police say there was one incident on the Coquihalla where a vehicle with four occupants was impounded near Merritt, for driving more than 75 kilometres over the speed limit.
Also, “of particular note” according to police, a driver was stopped in the Lower Mainland while driving 130 kilometres per hour in a residential neighborhood, and, four hours later, that driver was stopped while driving a different vehicle, going 160 km/h on the Trans-Canada Highway in Chilliwack.
Police say the number of excessive speeding tickets and impounds this weekend was “higher than usual.”
