This summer, non-BC residents will not be permitted to camp overnight in provincial parks.
Health Minister Adrian Dix says it is something that is taking place elsewhere and it makes sense for BC to do the same.
“I think what we’re trying to do, and you see other jurisdictions take this step… I believe Alberta and Saskatchewan and Manitoba, is to control to a degree non-essential travel or overnight travel. So, it’s just a prudent step that’s being taken.”
“And it’s also being done to assure access, potentially access should such campsites be reopened at some point in the summer, and that’s the direction we may be going. But, should they be opened at some point during the summer it is to ensure that British Columbians have access.”
The Ministry of Environment sent NL News the following statement:
- We recognize the power nature has for improving our health and wellness, and we are pleased to welcome people back into most provincial campgrounds.
- Opening campgrounds safely as part of B.C.’s restart plan means some closures will temporarily remain in place for specific parks, services and facilities.
- To keep parks open and safe for everyone to enjoy, we need to work together and follow the PHO guidelines for physical distancing.
- We need to ensure small communities are not overwhelmed by people who are ignoring advice to avoid non-essential travel.
- That’s why we are currently limiting camping reservations to B.C. residents only.
- This is not the time for road trips or bucket list adventures. Visit a park close to home.
