At least one school in the Kamloops-Thompson School District could have all students back in class as of today.
That’s Westwold Elementary, and that’s because there’s only seven students who go there.
Assistant superintendent Trish Smillie points out that returning to class for this month is voluntary, in SD73 and across B.C.
“For Westwold, they could have all their students on there and it would not be over capacity for the school if all students attended at one time. So for those classrooms that are very small to begin with, it may be the case that there may be over 50 per cent in the classroom.”
For privacy reasons based on the tiny student population, Smillie declined to say how many students are actually back in class today in Westwold.
For most other B.C. schools, the Ministry of Education is limiting class sizes to 50 per cent for kindergarten – grade five students and 20 per cent for grades six – 12.
“Westwold is different, because we have a full school for a very small number of students,” Smillie says.
