The city of Kamloops will begin working with the family of Captain Jennifer Casey and the Royal Canadian Air Force to explore options for a permanent memorial in the city.
The matter will go before city council on Tuesday, June 16, with the new Observation Park at the end of runway 09-27 proposed as a location for the memorial, as part of the Airport Gateway Corridor project.
Casey, a public affairs officer from the Snowbirds, was killed when the plane she was in crashed into a house shortly after taking on from Kamloops Airport on May 17.
“In response to the tragic crash, there have been many requests from residents of Kamloops, in general, and Brocklehurst, in particular, to establish a memorial,” Mayor Ken Christian said in a memo to city council.
“When I met with the Minister of National Defence and the Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force, they appreciated the outpouring of support they received from Kamloops and would welcome a permanent remembrance to replace the organic and spontaneous memorial.”
An impromptu memorial went up along the fence at Kamloops Airport hours after the crash, but it was taken down two weeks later to be preserved.
At this time, it is unclear what the permanent memorial will look like. There has been a call to change the name of Airport Road to Capt. J. Casey Memorial Way.
