More than a year after a public plea for truckers to stop dumping grain along Highway 5 near Blue River, it’s still happening.
Area director Stephen Quinn says as recently as Thursday, he saw several loads of grain dumped between Blue River and Valemount.
“These are not just dribbles of grain, they’re big dumps. And I don’t know who’s doing it or why, but it seems to be coming back again. So the only thing I would comment, is somebody on the prairies is losing a bunch of money in grain dumps,” he says.
“To be honest, I have absolutely no idea why they’re doing it. It’s just that it’s being done. The annoying part is, it’s providing an attractant for bears. And that’s where you run into all sorts of problems.”
Quinn says as far as he knows, no grain hauler has been caught in the act.
Last year, RCMP urged grain haulers to stop dumping along the highway, saying they think truckers might be doing it to drop weight before getting to weigh scales in Kamloops.
