Residents of Stump Lake are dealing with flooded out homes for the third year in a row and they don’t want any more studies, they want action from government. However, the Thompson Nicola Regional District says it’s not quite that simple.
Appearing in the NL Morning News, Director of Community Services at the TNRD, Ron Storie says with so many variables, the next step has to come from the the Ministry of Fisheries, Lands and Natural Resources.
“A study has to be done that will actually look at all stakeholders, down stream and up stream and when I say down stream, I’m talking about ranchers, they Upper Nicola Indian Band, the folks that live down stream on Nicola Lake and even further through the city of Kamloops,” he said.
“When you move water from the upper lake at Stump, through the Nicola and down stream you’re going to impact those users. In addition it would take into account hydrology, so in flows and out flows, climactic date, the design of a dam if you will and it would have to come up with some costs on that too.”
Stories notes all of those factors have to be taken into account, noting they haven’t looked at the issue ‘to this degree before. He says the TNRD discussed the issues with residents in July of 2018, noting quote – “there wasn’t an appetite, from what I can feel, to move forward with anything.”
