Kamloops RCMP are warning people about a potential phone scammer pretending to be a police officer.
Spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the detachment has gotten a few complaints from people who have gotten a from someone who is claiming to be a Kamloops RCMP officer, saying they had a warrant for the person’s arrest.
“These scam phone calls are often convincing because the call ID says 250-828-3000, which the phone number for the Kamloops RCMP,” she said, noting the caller demands payment in the form of gift cards. “Everyone should be aware that the police will never demand payment of any kind to get rid of an arrest warrant.”
She says its important to tell family members who may not have heard about this scam about it, to keep them safe.
“The more people who know about this scam, the better,” added Shelkie.
If you have suspect that you have been contacted by a scammer, you’re asked to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center either by phone at 1-888-495-8501 or online.
