There were at least five serious crashes on highways in southern B.C. on the weekend, and at least two have been deemed fatal by RCMP.
Both fatal crashes happened on Highway 99 east of Pemberton.
Yesterday, Mounties say the driver of a motorcycle was killed just before noon, about nine kilometres north of Joffre Lake. That person was from the Lower Mainland, but further detail on their identity is not known. That crash involved three motorbikes heading northbound, and a car that was going southbound. Four people, two motorbike drivers and both people in the car, were taken to hospital with minor injuries. A fifth person, who was a passenger on one of the motorbikes, was air lifted to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The highway was closed for 12 hours because of the crash.
Also on Highway 99 on Friday, at about 5 p.m., a 31-year-old man from Vancouver was killed on his motorcycle, after losing control while heading northbound before sliding into a vehicle that was coming southbound. That crash happened 10 km north of In Shuck Ch Forest Service Road, and there were no reports of any other injuries. The highway was closed for more than eight hours afterwards.
Closer to Kamloops, a serious crash on Saturday night involving a motorcycle closed Highway 97 for about two hours south of Duck Range Road, near Monte Creek.
Yesterday, there was also a crash on Highway 97C south of Logan Lake, which forced that section of highway to be shut down from about 1:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Further details are unclear; that crash follows a fatal crash on Canada Day on Highway 97C, between Logan Lake and Ashcroft.
Also yesterday, the Trans-Canada Highway was shut down east of Revelstoke because of a crash that happened at about 4:30 p.m. The highway partially reopened at 8 p.m., and fully reopened an hour later. Crash details remain unclear, but dashcam footage from the scene shared online shows a crash between a car and a semi-truck.
