There are plans to try and resurrect the Thompson Rivers University golf team for Canada West Athletics.
While the timing may not be good because of the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered Canada West activity until at least January, Rivershore Golf Links General Manager Kevin Oates would like to see the TRU golf team come back. In fact, he is also willing to host it.
“As a former team member myself under Bill [Bilton] at the Dunes, I think it’s something that the golf industry and Kamloops could benefit from,” said Oates.
Speaking to NL Sports, he says he has informally spoken with TRU about the plan.
“I have had initial brief conversations on if this could work or not,”he added. “I think once this pandemic is over and Canada West fires up again, I think there’s an opportunity here.”
Oates says he knows fundraising will be important, as they’ll have to look at the numbers to see if the team can be viable.
The golf team’s last season at TRU was 2013-14 academic year, with games hosted out of The Dunes. The golf team goes back to the College of the Caribou as the first team represented the college in the 1986-87 academic year.
For its part, the university says it has no plans to add a golf program in the immediate future.
