The Ministry of Transportation says it is looking to improve signage at sightlines at a challenging stretch of Highway 99, near Joffre Lakes.
Speaking on the NL Morning News, Transportation Minister Claire Trevena says some people aren’t always prepared for the winding, mountain road between Pemberton and Lillooet.
“Well any time there is an accident, we look at this, we look at safety records of that piece of highway. Obviously this is a mountain highway, it is very, very winding. We have the whole Sea-to-Sky four lane, and people enjoy doing the drive and maybe are not looking at this as a mountain highway. It is a mountain highway. We make sure that whenever there is an accident, we are ensuring that everything we can do to make that piece of road safe is looked safe.”
There were two fatal crashes on Highway 99 near Joffre Lakes earlier this month, on July 3 and July 5. The people killed in both crashes were riding motorcycles.
The Transport Ministry also says it will be reviewing reports from RCMP into those crashes, which could include further recommendations.
