Police are saying it’s lucky that no one was killed after a crash involving six vehicles near Sicamous last night, which included two semi-trucks.
The wreckage happened at about 6:30 p.m. last night about four kilometres west of Sicamous, between Bernie Road and Old Sicamous Road.
Mounties say a semi-truck heading westbound crossed the centre line of the highway while turning a sharp corner, before losing control and flipping onto its side. The semi then slid for about 50 metres before hitting a semi-truck that was going eastbound. Before that, the semi also slid into three pickup trucks and an SUV which were heading eastbound.
A 32-year-old man from Calgary, who was driving the westbound semi that started the crash, was charged under the Motor Vehicle Act for crossing a double solid line. Mounties say neither impairment nor weather conditions were factors in the crash but say speed likely was a contributing factor.
The eastbound semi-truck driver and three other people involved in the crash were all taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The highway was closed for more than eight hours, until after 2:30 a.m. this morning.
Sicamous RCMP detachment commander, Sgt. Murray McNeil, says that stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway there’s a rock face on the eastbound shoulder of the road and a steep drop off behind concrete barriers next to the westbound lanes.
“It is extremely fortunate that this collision did not result in multiple fatalities considering the length the truck traveled before finally coming to a stop, and the extent of the damage sustained to all the impacted vehicles,” McNeil says.
Police are still looking for details about the crash, and are asking any witnesses to call Sicamous RCMP at 250-836-2878.
