A man accused in a deadly shooting and aggravated assault in a church in Salmon Arm last year has been found not criminally responsible for the attacks.
The decision was issued on Wednesday during a one-day trial for Matrix Gathergood in B.C. Supreme Court in the Shuswap city.
Gathergood was charged after 78-year-old Gordon Parmenter was shot to death at the Church of Christ in Salmon Arm on April 14, 2019. A second person survived but was shot in the leg.
Justice Sheri Ann Donegan accepted testimony from a psychiatrist that Gathergood, was paranoid and suffered from schizophrenia, while irrationally believing that Parmenter was a mortal danger to him.
The decision means Gathergood will remain at the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Coquitlam pending regular reviews.
Salmon Arm Mayor Alan Harrison previously told NL News that people in the community loved Gordon Parmenter and his family, and he will be missed for all he did in the city.
