The city of Kamloops has begun to remove flood barriers around the city as water levels on the Thompson River continues to go down.
As previously reported by NL News, the Hesco baskets at McArthur Island were removed earlier this week, and the city is now turning its attention to Riverside Park.
Utility Services Manager Greg Wightman is hoping that work will be complete in time for the BC Day long weekend.
“Throughout the course of next week, we’re going to be trying to get everything back to as normal as possible down there. Certainly getting the railings installed on the pier again, getting the lights fired up again. We can activate the hydro again,” he said.
“We’re trying to get the park back to normal certainly for the long weekend, and allow everyone to enjoy it.”
Wightman is asking people to be careful as there will be large construction equipment present while work in ongoing in the park.
City staff are also removing flood-protection bags that were covering catch basins in low-lying areas of Kamloops. Sand and sandbags will be removed from the several locations where they were previously available for residents to do their own flood protection work.
Starting this weekend, people who got sand and sand bags from the city will be able to take it to either Mission Flats or Barnhartvale landfills free of charge, although you will have to separate the sand from the bags before you can dispose of it.
