As the COVID-19 pandemic rages on in the United States, it appears a growing number of Americans are thinking about moving to Canada.
“Generally speaking, I think people are looking at the political situation in the United States and what’s going on there, and comparing and contrasting with what’s going on in Canada, and seeing Canada potentially as a more stable environment,” Immigration Lawyer Bryan Fitzpatrick, said on NL Newsday.
But he notes that likely isn’t the only reason why moving are looking at moving north of the 49th parallel.
“Certainly in light of COVID-19, a lot of people are looking to Canada and the measured approach, and the outcome that we’ve enjoyed here, and are seeing that as another factor, another reason to come back to Canada,” Fitzpatrick added. “Our healthcare system is certainly a motivating factor as well.”
He says a number of Americans looking at moving north of the border are the ones who are married to Canadians.
“You know people are saying ‘hey, we get to get to look to Canada’. It’s a more stable environment from the immigration standpoint,” he said. “Economically, you know the potential if a Canadian citizen’s spouse no longer has a job in the US, that’s certainly going to contribute to their decision to come back to Canada.”
Fitzpatrick says he thinks people are looking to Canada as it would offer many potential immigrants the same kind of opportunities that would have had in the United States.
