With the heat wave almost behind us in the Kamloops area, we can still expect above-normal temperatures for some time to come.
Environment Canada forecaster Carmen Hartt says daily highs for this time of year are usually about 29 degrees, and temperatures should stay in the low-30s for at least the next week.
“When I look at the longer-term models, there’s actually indications of temperatures staying near or just above normal. So we could definitely see another heat wave, but this might be the hottest time of the summer right now. Just because it is the hottest period, and on top of that we have a weather system bringing us hot weather.”
Meantime, overnight lows in the Kamloops area are expected to be about 16 degrees for the next week.
“For those overnight temperatures, that can be pretty serious. Because the temperatures cool down and we feel relatively cooler, but it can be really problematic for sleeping overnight if you don’t have air conditioning. And it does affect humans, but it also affects our pets, livestock and the environment as well. So it is something to keep in mind as we just try our best to keep cool,” Hartt says.
Thursday was the hottest day so far of the heat wave in the southern Interior, and Lytton was Canada’s hot spot at 40.6 degrees.
Temperatures also hit 39 in Lillooet and 38.8 in Cache Creek, 38.7 in Ashcroft and 36.4 in Kamloops.
“As we move forward into August and the end of this summer, it’s less likely that we’ll see this type of heat but definitely heat waves are still possible,” Hartt says.
