Expanding the Car 40 program in Kamloops has seen no movement and a city councillor says it’s time to start talking and stop blaming.
Interior Health has been taking most of the heat but Arjun Singh thinks the finger pointing needs to stop.
“The problem almost out paces us so the only thing to think about there is that we really have to make sure we’re working with IH and police very collaboratively and sometimes, you know, we have trouble with that,” he said, on the NL Morning News.
“I don’t know who’s fault it is, I don’t want to try and lay any blame, I think we just going to have to put our big boy pants on and get this work kind of done, right?”
Singh thinks confrontation is just making the matter worse.
“Sometimes we get into this oppositional world where sometimes we put people backs up even further so from my perspective, and it’s my perspective, I just want to keep on helping build relationships with all the different partners and at city hall we also want to keep on investing in this work,” he added.
“You know I’m just sick of us pointing fingers at each other, we’ve got to sit around the table and really work this stuff out.”
Interior Health hasn’t said one way or the other if it will support expanding the program however they did send NL News a statement on Friday.
“Challenges related to mental health and policing are being experienced across B.C. and Canada and are not unique to Interior Health. Interior Health is meeting with partners to discuss services that support people in a mental health crisis,” it read.
“We share a commitment to continue to work together with police and others on effective solutions for people who require urgent mental health support. We must look at the whole picture, including the specific needs of the community and how to make the best use of available resources.”
IHA says there are meetings scheduled in the coming weeks to review what is already in place and what may be needed to support the people in need of mental health support.
City council is expected to bring up the issue when they meet next on August 25.
