Does the Horgan government have it out for young people?
The VP of The Independent Contractor’s and Business Association thinks so and pointed to ICBC as an example.
Young drivers are paying too much to insure their vehicles according to Jordan Bateman. “David Eby’s raised ICBC rates on young drivers. Some of these are just unbelievable, the stories that you read.”
You now, someone with a $5,000 Volkswagen Rabbit, a young woman with a clean driving record, albeit a short driving record, she’s paying $6,000 a year to insure a $5,000 VW Rabbit, that doesn’t make any sense.”
“Yes young drivers generally pay a little bit more across the insurance spectrum, however not that much more.”
Bateman thinks the insurance company will get even worse when it moves to a no fault system and gave the cap on claims as an example saying the wage loss benefit will be capped at $50,000 per year.
“Now you know may say well fifty thousand dollars for just being injured, ok well is it really that bad? Well it is if you’re going to school for a career that’s going to pay you in the six figures of more.”
“What bothers me is there’s no recourse in the courts.”
“You take away the rights of people, of everyone it’s not just young drivers, you’re taking away the rights of everyone to appeal these things in court, you lose that kind of safety net, you relying really on ICBC’s kindness and good will.”
Bateman took direct aim at the province’s Attorney General, “What was it that David Eby said? They’re going to have a culture of caring. Well anyone who’s been around ICBC would question if they’re even capable of that.”
“This is especially bad for young people who could lose potential income and that’s not be factored into this so ICBC is bad now with these higher rates for young people, it’s going to be even worse once we get to this no fault system.”
