A unique housing project for Indigenous elders and youth is almost done in Brocklehurst.
The project at 975 Singh Street has 31 units, and construction has just been finished.
City of Kamloops building and engineering development manager Jason Dixon says residents will likely be moving in very soon.
“I believe it was last week we did a final inspection. I would say it’s safe to say they’re very much in the process of finalizing that project. And would have occupancy if not now, it won’t be far off into the future that they will.”
During a ground-breaking in Kamloops last year, Housing Minister Selina Robinson talked about the building being a one-of-a-kind development.
“We might think it’s innovate, it’s actually what I’d say maybe a little old school. It’s traditional, and it’s very exciting to see young people have the opportunity to live together co-housed with elders, and provides the opportunities for both to thrive.”
Kamloops council approved zoning for the affordable housing project back in 2018, and last year it provided a 60-year lease for BC Housing to use the land.
