UPDATE – One man was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act after an armed standoff at a home on Babine Avenue in Juniper East this morning.
Police were called at 7:45 a.m. to a distraught man, who was believed to be armed.
Mounties arrived and the person did not cooperate with police, which led to a standoff and several neighbouring homes being evacuated.
The man inside the home was taken into custody just after 9:30 a.m. and taken to Royal Inland Hospital.
The scene has now cleared, and Sgt. Jeff Bingley told NL News at the scene that there was no risk to any other people besides the man involved.
“Seeing highly visible police incidents unfold in residential areas is always unsettling. We would like to thank the people disturbed by this event for their cooperation and understanding,” Staff Sgt. Simon Pillay says.
“In this case, the de-escalation process was successful and the male was eventually apprehended in a cooperative fashion.”
The Southeast District RCMP Emergency Response Team was also involved in the response.
Armed standoff happening at a home on Babine Avenue in Juniper right now. About half a dozen @KamloopsRCMP cruisers are in the area. Not a lot of panic. A guy is cutting his grass a few doors down from this. People are being asked to avoid the area for now though. #Kamloops pic.twitter.com/HLbgLBkX0C
