Heading into the Labour Day long weekend, B.C. health officials announced the second highest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases at 121 for a provincial total of 6,162, five of which were epi-linked.
The current single day record is 124 cases set last Friday, August 28. There was one new case in the Interior Health Authority which is now up to 451 cases.
Active cases increased again to 1,233, with now 2,792 people being actively monitored by public health teams because of an identified exposure to a known case of the virus.
There was one new death for a total of 211 in the province, with 33 now in hospital, 12 in intensive care.
“COVID-19 continues to affect our province and this long weekend is no different. Whether you’re celebrating the Canucks game tonight or meeting friends for a barbecue or camping, let’s make it a safe, small-group long weekend,” said a statement from the B.C. Health Ministry.
“Get outside this weekend and enjoy your time with friends and family and outdoor activities, while protecting the more vulnerable around you. We must maintain a very careful balance between fun and caution this long weekend and onwards to the fall.”
There was one new healthcare outbreak at KinVillage in the Fraser Health Region, and no new community outbreaks.
“We can’t let our end goal out of sight: keeping COVID-19 low and slow. Your actions this weekend and every day make a difference,” added the statement. “We have the tools and we can make the right choices. To be successful in this next phase, we need to step back to safely move forward. So let’s all make choices that will keep our communities, our Elders, our loved-ones and ourselves safe.”
A total of 4,706 people – roughly 76 per cent of the total cases – are considered to have recovered.
