Today is National Food Bank Day and the Kamloops Food Bank is looking at ways to raise funds through texting in their first Feed the Need day.
Executive Director Bernadette Siracky was on the NL Morning News and said while food donations still drive the organization, cash can go far and in a lot of ways. “Cash is very helpful for us.”
“We operate the largest food recovery program in our region and we bring in eight million dollars of perishable products every year for the the price of about 350-thousand dollars so we have trucks and staff etcetera.”
“We’re bringing in quality meats, produce, dairy so you know we need funds to operate that and that is just a perfect example of how if we put twenty dollars worth of gas in the gas tank we can bring back literally ten thousand dollars worth of food in one day.”
“We may spend money purchasing the bags and on some advertising and getting them to peoples house holds but those bags cost seven cents a bag and people can put thirty dollars worth of food in there so that’s also how we can use funds.”
Siracky says you can donate cash by texting the word ‘foodbank’ to the number 45678 and you’ll be asked if you’d like to donate 10 or 25 dollars and it will go directly on your phone bill.
The Kamloops Food Bank website has the details on all the ways you can make a donation.
