After months of a load restriction being in place on Highway 5A south of Kamloops, the Ministry of Transportation says it’s expected to be lifted in the “coming days.”
The highway was flooded at Stump Lake in early May, and after it reopened later that month the load restriction was put in effect.
It has continued because of a more recent slide at Cardeau Hill, about 11 kilometres south of Kamloops.
The Ministry of Transportation tells NL News that Argo Road Maintenance is in the process of fixing the road, and once that’s done, the 50 per cent axle weight limit will be lifted.
Meanwhile, the ministry says most construction to the highway at Stump Lake is finished, and it says that section of the road will be paved and a concrete barrier will be put up this month.
A temporary gravel road surface had been built when the highway first reopened after spring flooding. The province has spent $3 million this year to raise the highway above the maximum level of Stump Lake, and it says work on a more permanent, long-term solution could begin next year.
