For the second time this month, the Chief of the Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc (TteS) says someone tried to fraudulently use her name in a scam.
Roseanne Casimir says this second attempt involved a fake email sent from ‘chiefexecuive@gmail.com’ (note the spelling error in the email address) asking people to buy $50 and $100 gift cards and send the barcode back via email.
“This email was sent to our technical department and the RCMP for follow up,’ she said. “A reminder that these are very stressful and unprecedented times and crime rates have risen drastically. Thanks to all those who have reached out so that TteS could ensure that immediate action was taken to address the hack.”
“During these times we need to look out for each other.”
Casimir adds a recent breach of the Tk’emlúps servers that disrupted the band’s entire operation has also been fixed.
“Chief and Council is working with Human Resources and our technical team to provide computer security training to ensure that everyone knows how to recognize fraud, phishing, and other potential breaches of security,” she added.
Casimir previously told NL News that they were alerted on September 1 after someone from another government office said they had ‘an amazing conversation’ with the Tk’emlúps Chief.
She is also asking people to be on alert and contact the Tk’emlúps Rural RCMP or Crime Stoppers as well as the band’s communications department if they have more information.
