Business owners at Aberdeen Mall in Kamloops are being alerted after a customer with a confirmed case of COVID-19 was at the mall last Friday, Sept. 18.
General Manager Sandra Neufeld sent out a memo to tenants Saturday morning notifying them of the issue.
“We were contacted by Interior Health concerning a confirmed COVID-19 case involving a customer,” said the memo. “The customer has been advised by Interior Health to remain in quarantine and not return to the building until medically cleared to do so.”
Neufeld says the affected areas of the mall have been disinfected and that janitors have been doing increased cleaning of common touch points like door handles, handrails, elevator buttons, and bathroom fixtures.
There has been no public alert sent out by Interior Health. The health authority says at this time it does not speak to single cases in the community unless contact tracers are unable to trace every person who might have been exposed.
“Therefore we cannot confirm if this exposure occurred at Aberdeen Mall, but we can guarantee if anyone was at risk, our public health teams would have contacted them,” said IHA spokesperson Shayne Meechan, in an email.
At this time it is unclear how long the customer was at the mall, who they were with, or where in the mall they were.
“All tenants and vendors are asked to notify building management immediately if they learn one of their employees or visitors has tested positive for COVID-19 or is showing symptoms consistent with COVID-19,” added the statement from Aberdeen Mall.
“We will continue to monitor this emerging, rapidly evolving situation and will provide additional information as it becomes available to us.”
