A permanent camp has been set up near the Trans Mountain pipeline in Kamloops, by protesters who are opposed to the project.
The camp is just off of Mission Flats Road by Domtar. It’s out of view from the main road, located at the Mission Flats public beach along the Thompson River.
Members of the camp say the goal of the stop the pipeline expansion project from happening.
“We love our land, our water, our wild salmon, our people, ourselves, and we defend what sustains us and what will sustain our future generations,” a Facebook post from camp members reads.
The pipeline project has received prior and informed consent from the Stk’emlupsemc te Secwepemc Nation (SSN), which includes the Tk’emlúps Indian Band and the Skeetchestn Indian Band. Both bands have mutual benefit agreements with Trans Mountain, which provides a financial benefit for those communities.
NL News visited the area where the protest camp is this morning and bylaw and RCMP officers were seen walking towards the camp. It’s not clear what specifically those members were responding to, and NL News has reached out to the Kamloops RCMP detachment and the city’s Bylaw Services Department.
