The finishing touches are being put on permanent repairs to a flooded section of Highway 5A at Stump Lake.
Yellowhead Road and Bridge quality manager Andrew Stewart says crews are paving that section of highway, and will be done this week.
He says the new road surface is more than three feet higher than what it was before it was flooded, back in May. That was the third time in four years the highway flooded during the spring.
“It’s quite a bit up there. They’ve put a lot of work into it and we’ve raised it up, so hopefully there’s no more issues. Because every time it’s been kind of a temporary fix and then it gets flooded every single year. So hopefully this is definitely the more permanent fix, and we raised it up enough so that it won’t get flooded anymore.”
Stewart says there will be single-lane traffic for the next few days at Stump Lake while the highway gets paved, but says there shouldn’t be any full closures.
The Ministry of Transportation says repair costs this year to Highway 5A at Stump Lake have exceeded $3 million.
