Kamloops RCMP say a 32-year-old man is in custody after a domestic violence call at the Panorama Inn in the 600-block of Columbia Street West this morning.
Sgt. Darren Michels say police were called about 8:40 a.m. today to a situation in one of the rooms. He says initial reports to police had indicated that a woman was subject to a ‘domestic violence situation’ and that there was the possibility that a weapon was present.
“We take domestic violence calls very serious and our response is dictated by the information that we receive. I am happy in this case that things came to a peaceful conclusion,” Michels said.
He says given the uncertainty of the situation, there was heavy police presence in the area for some time, including the hold and secure at nearby Beattie Elementary, which has now been lifted.
“If we have an incident near a school, we will let the school know of an incident that is occurring, and they take the necessary precautions to make sure that children are safe,” he told NL News. “This was just a very short thing, but we would rather let them know for safety.”
Police are investigating after a weapon was found at the scene and Michels says the unidentified man was taken into custody peacefully and without incident.
“This was found to be an isolated incident and there is no further concern for public safety,” he added, noting it was not linked to a shooting at the nearby Hospitality Inn last Friday.
