Kamloops staff say some motel owners along Columbia Street West are being asked to clean up their properties.
Project manager for housing and homelessness Ty Helgason says the city is reviewing long-term and short-term zoning for those properties.
He says there are two motels with social housing units: the Panorama Inn and the Columbia Motor Inn. Meanwhile, many others provide affordable rental options.
“Bylaw will continue to respond to nuisance calls and keep an eye on the area. Our response is just a whole community response, and everybody is just doing their part to try to improve things along there.”
Kamloops RCMP Sgt. Darren Michels acknowledges there has been increased scrutiny by residents about issues in that corridor.
On Oct. 16, one person was taken to hospital after a shooting at the Hospitality Inn, which forced businesses on that corridor and two nearby schools to be locked down for hours while police investigated.
Five days later, right next door, there was an arrest at the Panorama Inn next door after a domestic violence call. Concerns of a weapon forced a brief lockdown when police responded.
