Another ugly weekend of COVID-19 cases in British Columbia.
Health officials reported 1,933 new infections over the past three days, including 104 in Interior Health.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says there are now 7,360 active cases, and nearly 10 per cent of those cases are resident of long-term care homes.
“As we’ve moved into this phase in our pandemic, our hospitalizations and transmission in long-term care have increased. And over this past weekend, we’ve had 17 people who’ve died from COVID-19. The majority of these people were seniors and elders in long-term care.”
In B.C. there have now been 58 deaths from COVID-19 in the past 10 days.
“This virus doesn’t pause though when we’re tired and frustrated and we want it be over. And it doesn’t pause when we’re out with our friends, family members and those we care with. It spreads quickly, and doesn’t wait for us to catch up. I say this not to give up hope, of course, because I do think there is hope.”
Henry says we have the tools, knowledge and resources to flatten the curve, like residents did in the spring.
“I say that to fuel that fire of determination and resilience that I have seen of people across this province. That when we see these challenges, we all think about what can we do, today.”
Meanwhile, in the Interior Health Authority, there are now 272 active cases and three people in hospital. Active cases have nearly tripled from the total of 93 three weeks ago, on Nov. 2.
The IHA says there are now 13 cases linked to the Royal Inland Hospital patient care tower project outbreak. “The additional cases are not new, but identified through ongoing contact tracing,” the health authority says. That outbreak remains ongoing, as well as an outbreak at The Hamlets at Westsyde long-term care home, where one staff member tested positive more than a week ago.
