A craft cannabis producer within the City of Kamloops is hoping to get a license from Health Canada by Christmas.
Dunesberry Farms owner Bill Bilton Jr. says his company will grow cannabis on eight-and-a-half acres on Westsyde Road, adjacent to The Dunes Golf Course.
“I believe we are the first, or would be the first, licensed facility in Kamloops for outdoor grow. The market advantage there is our cost of production. The indoor guys, they have a huge footprint for water and Hydro, and so forth, and they’re cost of production is much higher. The greenhouse guys aren’t far behind,” he says.
“So we’re going to utilize natural resources. The North Thompson River, we’ve got the nice Kamloops sunshine. So all in all, we should be able to produce a product, quite frankly, one-tenth or lower of the cost of indoor and greenhouse producers.”
Bilton tells NL News the company should be ready to harvest next fall, and says it will process the cannabis at an indoor facility on site before distributing.
He says hopes to have its license to grow in about a month.
“We’re down to the short strokes with Health Canada. The application process is an extremely difficult and long road, in terms of the logistics, the paperwork, and everything they require. The regulations are really off the charts.”
