B.C.’s top doctor is reminding people that her orders from last Thursday mean no events of any kind.
Dr. Bonnie Henry says the only exceptions will be weddings, funerals, and ceremonies like baptisms – all of which have their own restrictions, including a maximum capacity of just 10 people.
“Focus on the intent of what we are trying to do right now which is stop those transmissions from happening, reducing our connections so that we can get through this next phase of the pandemic together,” she said.
“Instead of thinking about how can I find my way around this, think about your way to stop the spread. What can I do today to make a difference? And remember, we all need to show compassion and understanding and do our part.”
B.C. reported 1,933 new cases and 17 new deaths over the weekend, and Henry is asking people to stay resilient in the fight noting people have the tools, knowledge, and resources to flatten the curve, like residents did in the spring.
“This virus doesn’t pause though when we’re tired and frustrated and we want it be over. And it doesn’t pause when we’re out with our friends, family members and those we care with. It spreads quickly, and doesn’t wait for us to catch up,” Henry added. “I say this not to give up hope, of course, because I do think there is hope.”
“I say that to fuel that fire of determination and resilience that I have seen of people across this province. That when we see these challenges, we all think about what can we do, today.”
Henry says health officials are closely monitoring the situation noting the restrictions may be extended beyond Dec. 7, if things don’t improve.
“The vast majority of event organizers and venues have been doing a great job and they have robust COVID-19 safety plans and we know they have been working, but we need to take a pause for these next two weeks in this province, all of us, so that we can get control of this virus,” added Henry.
